International Festival of Catalan Culture & Local Community

20 September 2025

A free spectacular international event organised with the Southwark-based Castellers of London, and London Catalan School (Escola Catalana de Londres) both of which are celebrating their 10th anniversaries in 2025.

To celebrate,  Castellers of London are joined by Mannekes de Brussel·les and Colla Joves Xiquets de Valls. Mannekes de Brussel·les  is one of the growing number of international groups spreading castells, and Colla Joves is a top rated colla (team) from the birthplace of castells in the city of Valls, near Tarragona.  Founded in 2015 to promote the tradition of castells in the British capital, the Castellers of London bring together members of all ages and backgrounds.

Building castells, or human pyramids, is a Catalan tradition that dates back more than 200 years.   Colla Joves will be building 8 levels, as they did on their previous visit in 2014, and London and Brussels will each build 6 levels, with all the groups helping each other and showing what can be achieved when communities come together to build a castell.

The human towers will start at 13:00 with the aim of completing them all by 15:30.  The afternoon will also include  performances from The London Catalan Choir  and Bermondsey-based Carragher Academy of Irish Dancing.

Presented in association with the Catalan Government’s Delegation to the UK and Ireland and Living Bankside, the day will be celebrated by visiting dignitaries from the City of Valls and local representatives. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the day; it’s suitable for all ages.
