Potters Fields Park & St John’s Churchyard

Happy Birthday to us!

11 November 2025

Potters Fields Park Management Trust turns 20 today!

In 2005, the Trust was founded as a not-for-profit organisation to manage Potters Fields Park.     A lot has happened since, including a redesign in 2007/8 which transformed Potters Fields into a world class park, offering space to enjoy recreation, events and private contemplation.  Wide lawns facing the river offer spectacular London views,  while wildlife-friendly gardens provide peaceful respite next to Tooley Street.

Back then, we were the first London park to introduce Piet Oudolf’s innovative prairie planting scheme.  Now, planting is being renewed to ensure sustainability,  improve biodiversity, reduce water use and cope with climate change.  110 species of pollinator-friendly plants have already been planted in recycled sand and crushed concrete, ensuring that little or no watering will be needed.    Plans for Phase 2 are underway.

We’ve also managed  St. John’s Churchyard since 2017 and made improvements to create a welcoming community park.   Wetland and wildflower planting offers stimulation for human visitors and a safe habitat for bees, butterflies and foraging insects.   We’ve renovated the children’s playground, added table tennis and boules facilities, and restored the Grade II-listed railings along Fair Street.

Continuing improvements, and the award-winning maintenance of both parks, would not have been possible without the income generated by hiring out Potters Fields Park  on a limited number of days a year.

Over the years, we’ve hosted a great range of events including film launches;  sporting celebrations including the London 2012 Olympics,  men’s and women’s European football festivals and roadshows, rugby and cricket promotions;   international food and cultural festivals; film shoots; charity challenge events and a host of activations, PR stunts and product launches.   Community events have featured Big Lunches,  Jubilee celebrations, Lantern Parades,  Family Fun Days and festivals, in partnership with local business and residents’ organisations.

Huge thanks to everyone who’s joined us over the last 20 years, including:  the Trust’s voluntary board members who represent our local communities; staff past and present; the Gavin Jones gardening team; neighbours; suppliers; friends – and all the event clients who’ve chosen to hire our beautiful Potters Fields Park.

PS:   We might just be planning a little celebration next summer for our 21st……watch this space!
